The pandemic caused a significant change in how people consume content, with the popularity of OTT platforms increasing. This has led to a reluctance among viewers to spend money on watching movies in theaters, choosing to wait for OTT releases instead. Sri Crazyminds, speaking at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF), noted that with the abundance of content on mobile devices post-lockdown, attention spans have decreased to just twenty seconds. Motivating viewers to leave their comfort zones and go to theaters has become challenging, requiring strong content to attract audiences. The success of films in theaters is dependent on the quality of the content and the ability to engage viewers through trailers. The availability of legal content on OTT platforms shortly after release has reduced piracy. Releasing a film nowadays requires a considerable budget, making it increasingly challenging. The plethora of options has led to confusion among viewers, with the need for compelling content to inspire them to watch in theaters.Roughly 400 movies are submitted to the censor board for approval, but only about 200 of them are eventually released in theaters. I believe that these factors collectively represent the core issue at hand.
